Een Wandboard is een heel klein en zuinig developer board met een Freescale i.MX6 ARM SoC.
Er zijn drie varianten van het wandboard, de Solo, de Duo en de Quad, wat verwijst naar het aantal ARM cores in de SoC. Bij deze drie varianten neemt, naast het aantal cores, ook het geheugen en verdere uitrusting toe. Zie de wandboard site voor details.
De Wandboard Quad, zoals in het plaatje, met 4 cores en 2048MB geheugen en een SATA aansluiting, heeft dezelfde SoC als de Novena opensource laptop.
De eenvoudigste versie is de Wandboard Solo met z'n enkele core en 512 MB geheugen. Die is nog het meest te vergelijken met de RPi.
Het wandboard is een kompleet systeem. Ik had het board, WiFi antenne, behuizing en voeding besteld. Voeding erbij omdat ik geen passende voeding had liggen en behuizing en antenne erbij, omdat dat de antenne weinig extra kost en omdat een los board te makkelijk stuk gaat. De behuizing blijkt mooi compact te zijn en blijft ook zonder schroefjes goed zitten. Nadeel is dat je niet meer bij de SATA connector komt of de GPio connector, maar dat is iets voor later.
Ik ben redelijk bekend met ubuntu linux en daarom kies ik voor deze testinstallatie voor de ubuntu versie van de armhf site (ubuntu 14.04). Het SD kaartje prepareer ik op mijn linux desktop pc. Voor de installatie zijn er twee files te downloaden, de uboot loader en het linux rootfs.

Je partitioneert de SD kaart (laat ruimte voor de loader) en je formatteert de Linux partitie. Je mount de Linux partitie en kopieert het (uitgepakte) rootfs naar deze partitie. Daarna plaats je de uboot image vooraan op de SD kaart via dd. Als alles op het kaartje staat moet je de SD kaart 'veilig verwijderen'.
Het spannende moment komt om te kijken of het werkt. De SD kaart moet in het SD slot van de module. Netwerkkabel voor de ethernet aansluiten, en de 5V voeding inprikken. Er gaan leds aan en er is geen rook, dus tot zover goed.
Welk IP heeft de unit heeft gekregen. De home-router laat alleen MAC-adressen van clients zien die via WiFi zijn verbonden, maar niet die van het bekabelde netwerk. Via 'trial and error' zoeken duurt te lang (de eerste drie waren al niet goed). Nu heb ik ook diverse tools op m'n PC waaronder NMap en hiermee heb ik de dhcp range gescand voor open ssh poorten. Het 'nieuwe' systeem met de open ssh poort moet het wandboard zijn.
Nu het IP-adres gevonden is, kan ik verbinding maken en inloggen. Gelijk maar het standaard wachtwoord aangepast, zodat die niet meer 'ubuntu' is. Even updaten via apt-get zorgt ervoor dat alles op de laatste stand komt. Nieuwschierig kijk ik verder. Het boxje heeft zowel een IPv4 adres als een IPv6 adres gekregen.

[Augustus 2014] Ik heb niets wandbord specifiek te melden. Ik gebruik de wandboard als een (headless) linux systeem waarop een webserver draait, waarvoor de Quad zwaar overkill is. De unit is lekker zuining ongeveer 4W en dat is goed als always-on systeem. Ik gebruik nog geen specifieke wandboard I/O en heb ook nog geen connectoren geregeld om iets aan te sluiten.
the original wandboard website now (spring 2022) seems outdate or offline. There are still other sites with usefull info and there is a successor of the original wandboard. There are stil some old images floating arround, but not much that is actually updated, so you need to create it yourself now.

De geinstalleerde distributie is vrij kaal, alleen de meest benodigde software zit erin. Daarmee blijft het basis image lekker klein en kan je de aanvullende software er later gewoon bijzetten. Om zelf pakketten te kunnen compileren van source moet er dus wat bij.
Om zelf software te kunnen installeren moeten de daarvoor benodigde tools worden geinstalleerd. Die zitten in de repository. Installeren is snel gedaan. De belangrijkste is het 'build-essential' package. Installatie gaat met sudo apt-get build-essential en duurt niet lang.
